Illinois passed the state’s Complete Streets policy in 2007. The policy is codified in a 2010 revision of the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Design and Environment Manual, a.k.a., the BDE.
A recent national study of children commuting to school found that kindergarten children from less safe neighborhoods who walk or bike to school have significantly lower BMI scores than their peers who traveled to school by car or public transportation. – Alliance for Biking and Walking
